winter light
on bare birch branches
swirling snow
small stones left
on frosted grave markers
a speeding FedEx truck
smooth silver ice
sliding off cedars
birds on clean branches
empty city streets
silent spreading virus
northbound geese over the river

David is a retired college dean and professor who taught most recently at American University’s School of International Service. He lives in Washington, DC.
